Duke’s OceanFest is held every summer in Waikiki in honor of Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968). The 10th annual Duke’s OceanFest will celebrate the 121st anniversary of surfing and swimming legend Duke’s birth.

The celebration will include a combination of water sports competitions and exhibitions including a one-mile swim race, tandem surfing, surfboard water polo, stand-up paddling, beach volleyball, longboard surfing, and the 2011 Hawaii Paddleboard Championships.

 August 24 marks Duke’s birthday which begins with a 7am ceremony, during which the bronze Duke statue on Waikiki Beach, will be heavily draped in long lei strands. 

Duke Kahanamoku

A descendant of Hawaiian royalty, Duke was born and raised in Honolulu.  Among his many accomplishments, Duke was an Olympic gold medal swimmer, a surfer, an esteemed canoe steersman, a Hollywood actor, and the Sheriff of Honolulu. Wow, this man truly was a legend and will be forever legendary!
