The legend of Kicking Horse is a timeless story that has captured the imagination of adventurers for generations. Deep in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Kicking Horse Pass is a place where history and natural beauty converge.

In the 1850s, Sir James Hector, a Scottish geologist and naturalist, led an expedition to survey and map the region.

As the party crossed the rugged mountains and treacherous terrain, they encountered a particularly challenging obstacle—a steep and seemingly insurmountable pass.

Legend has it that while traversing the difficult terrain, Sir James Hector’s packhorse—aptly named “Kicking Horse” became agitated. Frustrated and overwhelmed by the treacherous conditions, Kicking Horse reared up, kicking with incredible force and sending rocks tumbling down the slope. In this moment of defiance, the horse inadvertently revealed a hidden route through the pass, a path that would later become known as Kicking Horse Pass.

This newfound passage was eventually developed into the famous Kicking Horse Pass, which later became a vital part of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The legend of Kicking Horse serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of exploration and adventure that shaped the Canadian West.
